You can see the gentrification of the area with new complexes being built and lovely new local restaurants like Emilia’s and Zia Lucia. The whole salers along commercial road give character to the area, and the canals are lovely to explore. You’ve also got St Katherines Dock very near by which is so nice!
Transport
You’re also so well connected to get anywhere in London. There’s District, Circle, Hammersmith & City, Central, DLR, and overground stations all within walking distance. I work across two offices; in the city of London, which I can walk to in 20 minutes and Canary Wharf which is a 15 minute direct bus away. There’s also an Easy Bus stop for easy access to Luton and Stansted.
Community
There’s a complete mix of young professionals, families and students round here. There’s not any parking on our road, but you can stop for loading which is helpful when moving furniture or bigger items. Rubbish collection happens 3 times a day and is collected from the main road we’re off. This is really convenient and any time the bins get full or we have people over we can the rubbish out immediately. As we are on a side road off of Commercial Road we benefit from reduced traffic noise.
Amenities
I love living here. There’s so much within walking distance. I can walk to work in the city. Spitalfields Market is a 10 minute walk and has regular vendors, street trucks, shops and restaurants. DF Taco is a great Mexican restaurant as you head towards Brick Lane. Brick Lane itself has loads of independent vintage shops which are definitely worth a visit. Another local favourite is Box Park in Shoreditch (especially Soft Serve Society). A Sunday treat is a walk along the canals to Victoria Park for their weekly produce and street food market (shout out to Anna Mae’s Mac & Cheese 👌🏻). There are so many independent bars, coffee shops and restaurants we’re yet to try them all. You’ve also got culture on your door step with Whitechapel Gallery and the Museum of London both within walking distance.
Great particularly for families
One thing that seems very important to mention is that there is a community centre on our street that was particularly helpful during the pandemic as they distributed free food parcels to the neighbourhood but they also offer childcare, clubs and trips. There are two parks, a children’s park within the estate (accessible to anyone) and a dog park a minute’s walk further. There is a local shop a minute away, a few pubs and a local sainsbury and tesco and a cinema 10 minutes walk away.
Transport
As I already mentioned, there many train stations within walking distance, making a significant amount of journeys permissable, such as Tower Gateway, Tower Hill, Aldgate, Aldgate East and larger stations such as Fenchurch and Liverpool St, all of which are generally reliable. The traffic can be pretty bad sometimes, particularly from 4-6, but some days you can get lucky. I’d say it’s more an area meant to people who make use of public transport but it is also not impossible to have a car, as we have one. The traffic is not too bad depending on your direction, for example the Highway is pretty busy, the direction of Southwark, Limehouse, but smaller roads such as Leman St, Alie St, aren’t too bad. Buses include 15, 100 and others going in pretty much every direction except towards Limehouse/Docklands. The buses do not come to often however and I would suggest using train.

The only issue with my street would be parking availability is pretty bad, traffic noise occasionally but genuinely not so often. The street is mainly filled with families. Bin collection is pretty good too, with loads of bins around.
Amenities
There are many things in the local area, exciting places to go that are a 5-15 minute walk. Tower bridge and the Tower of London, St Katherine’s Docks with restaurants that have the view of boats and water (particularly beautiful at night) for example Zizzi’s and Kilikiya. Just across the bridge there is The Ivy, Vapianos and more new restaurants to come in that vicinity. Not far from important stations such as Fenchurch, Liverpool St and very close to stations such as Tower Gateway, Tower Hill, Aldgate and Aldgate East. Not to mention Central London is a short drive away.
Not feeling safe is the worst part of living in this area
Not feeling safe is the worst part of living in this area. Needs a complete renovation.
Transport
Bit far away from the tube station but is doable. Transport links have a good service and it’s always easy to get back no matter where you’re travelling from at what time of day.
Community
Close to a McDonalds, close to a hospital. Tesco express is useful for grabbing what you need. Bin collections regular.
Amenities
Good food options but not much else to do. Not many bars around or places with fun activities. Needs more open space as currently feels very cramped.
Shadwell is connected via DLR, which is only one stop away from central London (Bank station)
