I found that my area has lost its colour and life. As an attempt to modernise, deconstruct old buildings and space, it’s taken a part of my childhood which only memories can fill now. Like for example, the green grass that is now a parking area, like the mini parks dotted around that are now devoid of proper park equipment and children. But lucky for me, as bittersweet as it can be, I’ve grown up and had my childhood. So at least there’s still local shops I can rely on to go and buy my bread and milk when I need it or buy some unhealthy snacks as I’m coming home from work.
Transport
The distance between my house and the two underground train stations (Bow station and Mile End station) that are situated opposite, is about the same for me. It’s within walking distance so I find travel much convenient, especially the bus stops. There are night buses too so if I’m travelling late, it never poses a problem. In addition, the waiting times isn’t too bad for the buses at my local bus stop, about 2 to 5 minutes. However, when it’s rush hour, getting to where I need to go can be annoying, particularly travelling in the direction towards the city as I go to work. And since my location is close to the city, there is always extremely bad traffic around rush hour.
Community
In my area, I get a mixture of couples, families and renters living. I can’t remember the last time I ever encountered any anti-social behaviour. As the years have passed, you hear less children play outside. It’s become a rare thing and my neighbourhood is fairly quiet most of the time.
Amenities
If the subject of the conversation were both local and convenient, then my local Tesco would fit right in. It’s a grocery store that contains all the basic food necessities one can buy. If it’s baking, all the must-need ingredients are there at my disposal. If it’s snacking on a lazy day, watching Netflix, my favourite reeses packet never fails to satisfy my craving. If I’m on the go for work and in need of some food, worthy to fill a lunchtime appetite, then there are plenty of options to choose. But the issue with our local Tesco’s, is that it’s small and so it lacks variety and global fusion. So, if we’re looking for some essential spices for cooking or halal meat/chicken, our local ‘Bengali shop’ is the way to go, which is only a few steps away from Tesco. It’s like your combined butcher shop and Cash and Carry, which is most popular amongst the Asian community. I can say there are restaurants in our local area but I can’t fully call them restaurants where you can sit and dine and enjoy your time! Most of them are pretty much open for takeaway unless you decide to eat in the small crampt space provided and that’s for most restaurants: Subway, PFC, KFC. The most popular place is our Perfect Fried Chicken place. It doesn’t really come as a surprise because it’s a part of East London. You’d be surrounded by a lot of these restaurants so there’s no escaping the unhealthy, greasy chicken! There is always Starbucks, Costa and Co-operatives which all huddle in one area (under the yellow bridge in Mile End). These shops and restaurants are mostly occupied by students, university students from Queen Mary because of it’s close proximity to the campus. Opposite that, exhibits a line of some average restaurants to which you can sit, dine and enjoy your time! Nando’s as one of them, is extremely popular, attracting mostly young people for its affordable prices, overhyped chicken and along with it, it’s reputation.

The area is beautiful and inviting. For us, apart from the fantastic central location, the maritime feeling and rich history in the area made us truly fall in love. The sense of community, almost like in a small town with lots of pet owners and young families, is an additional plus.
Transport
The area is well connected to the east and west because of many DLR stops, making travel towards Canary Wharf and the city very fast, convenient and pleasant. Waiting times can be longer when travelling to some of the branch destinations, but trains are very regular and reliable on the whole. The trains and stations are clean and safe and staff are very friendly. The closest tube stations are on the Isle of Dogs which can make journeys to the north or south rather less convenient. There is a stop for the c2c service, allowing to make the journey to Southend-on-Sea in 45 minutes. Bus connectivity is good, with reliable service and clean buses. Uber boat services are available from Canary Wharf pier for a more expensive but very pleasant trip along the Thames.
Community
The area is pleasant and clean with pretty new built houses along with well kept historic buildings. People living in the street are typically young professional couples, often also with children. There is a generally friendly and welcoming atmosphere within the community.

There are a number of supermarkets for everyday shopping, many fantastic pubs and restaurants and all the shops and bars of Canary Wharf within short walking distance. The area offers a beautiful mix of the modernity of the financial hub and the vintage charm of old wharf buildings along the Thames. There are plenty of parks such as Ropemakers Field and Mile End Park as well as beautiful walks along the Thames, the canals and Limehouse Basin.

There are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby and a huge park that is great for morning walks, cycling or taking children’s out to play. There is a leisure centre which is 5min away great for gym swimming or taking on any classes. However there is no other gym available within e3 area and the leisure centre one can be quite expensive.
