Extremely convenient area, if not a bit boring for Central

Ultimately, I feel that this area has a village-type feel despite it being in the thick of things. There's a very interesting mix of people in the area, and although it's overall pretty up market (expensive, but pretty good value), it does not feel too trendy like Shoreditch or stuck-up like Mayfair! For the Barbican Estate itself, pets are not allowed unfortunately, although I would say it's a good area for children, as the private residents gardens have a playground. The Barbican area is very self-contained and convenient, although you do need to exercise caution when going north/northeast of the immediate vicinity, especially late at night.

Transport

Tube is extremely fast and reliable from Barbican station (Hammersmith & City, Circle, Metropolitan Lines); Farringdon is about a 10 min walk away from that station, where the Thameslink can take you from Brighton/Gatwick up through to Luton/Bedford. Short walk to Old Street (Northern Line) and St Pauls (Central Line). All in all, most of the tube network converges on the area, which is great in the case of delays, since there are then several ways of getting around! Bus routes are a bit suboptimal, but that's mostly just that they're stuck on routes that take extremely slow roads going west into central London, and their renegotiation of the routes going south of the river (Waterloo etc) was not particularly welcome.

Community

In the Barbican Estate, it is very quiet, although some flats are susceptible to street noise on Aldersgate Street. Flats above the high-walk 'Podium' level, however, are nearly as quiet as country living! Other residents are a mixed bag - most of whom are very friendly, although some are very standoffish. Mostly couples/small families, more owners than renters (but still plenty of renters), and anti-social behaviour in the buildings is very rare, although some obnoxious, albeit non-dangerous behaviour from non-residents late at night on the Podium level has become a bit frustrating.

Amenities

The Barbican area is an extremely convenient area to live - so many supermarkets within easy walking distance. The world class Arts Centre is, naturally, the main feature, and the adjoining library is one of the best I've been in. Restaurants are a bit lacking, especially on the cheaper side of things, and the area is dead (like the rest of the City) during weekends, often including shut pubs, etc. The pubs that are there, though, are fantastic and full of history. Coffee is great in the area! I almost thought that London was a lost cause with coffee until I began to live in the Barbican area.

Trendy area, off the beaten (and worn out) urban city path

Trendy area, off the beaten (and worn out) urban city path, so it's convenient but not crazy (unlike Soho, Shoreditch or Hackney). Feels safe.

Transport

Very well connected by bus, tube and train to other parts of London and beyond. Also easy access to cycle lanes and cycle ways, which makes it easy to cycle across London in all directions from here.

Community

Mostly commercial offices in the area which makes it quiet in the weekend (which is nice). Council amenities/services like bin collection etc are well maintained/provided. Parking is tricky though, with limited lots and congestion charges, so best to be taking public transport.

Amenities

Centre of London, what more can I say? Incredibly central and convenient area to live with almost all other areas of London (Soho, Shoreditch, Islington, South Bank, and beyond) within easy reach (even walkable), well connected by public transport to areas further afield, but also quiet and not crazy congested like other parts of the City, with lots of local flavour amenities (bars, pubs, restaurants, cafes) in the area. Bear in mind though, not as much open space and large green areas nearby as other parts of London, but easy enough to get to these places by public transport, if that's what you're looking for. Great area to live for an urbanite.

It’s being regenerated but I think COVID will be very bad for prosperity locally

Transport

Tube services at old street, Barbican and Farringdon. Farringdon is excellent for tube, train and thameslink giving great access from London Bridge, Kings Cross and beyond

Community

Lots of businesses in the area. A mix of owners and rented. Some social housing too. It’s an area that is being gentrified.

Amenities

Loads of pubs, bars and restaurants for both lunches and evening. Italian delis in the area are good and the slaughtered lamb pub is excellent for outside drinking
