Amazing sense of community, one of the most unique places in London.

What I like most about my area is the fact that it has all the services I require - from supermarkets to takeaway shops, community centres, open spaces, parks and even advice centres. There is rarely the need to leave the borough or local area for services. There is a wide availably of GP services, dentists and hospitals too in cases of medical emergencies. In addition to this, there is the famous Camden market which adds a trendy atmosphere to the local area. There is no specific area which needs regeneration as it would take away from the uniqueness of Camden, which in itself is a lively yet quiet place. The area indeed is suitable for children and pets, as there are parks for children and parks specifically designed for dogs. The area is also adult friendly as there are other parts of Camden which have pubs and bars. These two areas or sides do not mix, e.g the pub is not located near the park, which creates a safe environment for everyone to live in harmony.

Transport

There is huge availability of transport links in my local area. I cannot remember a time where I have been late for an interview or work due to transport letting me down. There is a wide range of bus services on Kentish Town road - buses include the 46, 214, 88, 134 and 393. These buses have regular services with the latest being the 393, which comes at the latest every 8-12 minutes. On Hawley road TFL serves bus routes 24, 168, 27 and 31. Of these routes the 24 is available 24 hours, 7 days a week which is convenient as the route serves the main part of Camden Town - a popular area in Camden. There is also the Kentish Town West overground station which serves popular destinations such as Highbury and Islington. The train station has two platforms with trains arriving as regularly as every 5 minutes. There is also Camden Town underground station which has two exits - one on Kentish Town road and one on Camden High street, which is convenient for those in a rush needing to go to a specific place. On Kentish Town road there is Kentish Town underground station, which has a very homely essence due to the station being small in size. However, the platforms do not lack in size and the route connects at Camden Town station which is convenient. In terms of cycle lanes, the council has introduced a massive revolution in favour of cyclists by closing off many side roads and alley ways to motor vehicles. The majority of roads have cycle lanes and some B roads are for cycles ONLY! This makes NW1/The borough of Camden very cyclist friendly. Examples of cycle lanes can be seen on Hawley road and Prince of Wales road, where there has been a new lane obstructed near the bus lanes for cyclists to cycle safely. In terms of cleanliness of public transport, the buses are often clean to an adequate standard - the same too with the overground services. However, the underground stations (Kentish town and Camden Town) are often unclean, especially on the platforms which are littered with newspapers and food packages. Very minimal problems exist within the local transport systems. If I had to name one of the very few issues, it would be rush hour. Often on the tube/underground it is crammed, and vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, disabled people and children find it hard to access or even get on the train due to their vulnerabilities. This may make it hard for school children to get to school in the mornings. However, due to covid this problem is put on a temporary hold. The buses are moderately busy in the mornings, especially around 7:30-8:00am. This is due to school children, teenagers attending college and people going to work. Apart from these two issues public transport provided by TFL is to an impeccable standard.

Community

There are various good aspects of living on my street - the best one being the sense of community. There is a stigma around council housing and housing associations in working class areas. On my street, the residents all get along and often see each other at the park, while walking the dog or even at the local corner store buying milk. There are garage facilities available for residents who are willing to pay a small and affordable fee for more private parking. My street has a wide range of parking which falls into the CA-F category, with parking spaces available to residents with parking permits. There is never a full space, even with so many residents and cars, there is always a place to park your car where you know it’ll be safe. Bin collections happen regularly with big silver bins available for residents of both big and small buildings. Bins are always half empty which is a positive thing, as the council’s bin men do their job on time and precisely. Anti-social behaviour is unfortunately an inevitable aspect of all places regardless of the facilities available for the youth in that area. On my street, there are lots of young residents, many which behave well, while the others unfortunately engage in anti social behaviour. This includes random yelling throughout the night and early morning, graffiti on bins and doors and involvement with police occasionally. These issues are dealt with promptly by the council and local authorities. There is not much traffic noise luckily, as the road by my house is not a main A road, rather a small road that connects to the main roads of NW1. In terms of residents, my street mainly composes of working class people who live in Council housing. Occasionally there are some privately owned flats which have been bought by council tenants - these private houses/flats are rented by students and some have been turned into Air b&b’s.

Amenities

There are many shops in my local area - from restaurants to cafes and bars. There are many fast food shops where you can takeaway food - especially in the very popular Kentish Town road, where there are about 4 fast food chicken shops. On Kentish Town road you can also find cafes including the popular chain Cafe Nero, as well as supermarkets such as a Tesco express and Lidl. There are charity shops such as Oxfam too. This is a rather busy part of my area. On the other end of the spectrum, there are very quiet parts to NW1. For example, the Castlehaven open space is the perfect place for a quiet evening stroll or for walking the dog. On Castle road there is a specific park for dogs which gives dog owners the freedom they need. On Lewis street, there is a football court for the youth to exercise and play whenever they like. There are many parks for children and teenagers to enjoy, all distances appropriately so that residents do not miss out or feel that there is not a park near their house/flat/apartment. In this quiet section of NW1/Castle road, there is a well-known pub where the locals can connect over a drink - this infamous pub is “Tapping the Admiral”, which unites teachers, key workers, local residents, and people of all classes. The quality of the services mentioned are outstanding, with heartfelt and honest google and trust pilot reviews. However, due to covid 19 the quality of some services has reduced - for example, restaurants and takeaways offer a reduced service, dining in is not allowed and bars are often closed or opened only on specific days. This has limited the availability of these leisure services however, the wide range of these pubs, bars, restaurants and supermarkets compromise for the opening times and days.

Good green spaces and walking distance to shops, cafes bars. Perfect for families, children and pets.

The area is good walking distance to the university UAL: Central St Martin’s. It is run down in some areas but overall clean and has purpose. There are tourist spots, good amenities and you are always close to a green space. I feel very safe living here and is the perfect place for children and pets (there already is an abundance!)

Transport

There are a good number of bus stops and routs around the area. Due to the location it is easy to get to many places without changeovers (close to kings cross) the overground and underground are walking distance (Camden town) and I have not experienced any late trains or unpleasant staff or stations. Camden Town Tube before the pandemic was often full to capacity even before peak times. It would also close unexpectedly and often doesn’t cope well or shut completely when one of the many music venues in Camden (electric ballroom especially) would host a gig or concert. There are a few bike paths on the road, the canal and walkways that are buck left and pedestrian friendly for cyclists. Roads are also being made more cycle friendly which is good.

Community

The roads are wide and can fit cars parked on either side as well as two stream traffic. Residents can apply for parking permits and it is free to park on the weekend. A few houses have driveways. The street is very quiet as there are no busses that pass down it. There is a single file bottleneck Junction at the end of the road to limit traffic and speed from the main road to the residential area. The railway lines that terminate in kings cross platform 9, 10 and 11 travel under a section of the street however I have no noise complaints. It is a very residential street but still close to local amenities. Bin collections are on time, a good mixture of families, young professionals, students, friends live on the street with a little over half half the properties converted into flats abs the others as full houses. Neighbours are friendly and polite. Majority seem to be renters however there are a good amount of homeowners

Amenities

There are two small local shops (shell garage and Nisa Local) at either end of my road which are fantastic for quick essentials but not for a general food and supplies shop. There is a larger Tesco petrol station with a sizeable shop and a large Sainsbury’s in walking distance. Lots of good sized parks and spaces for teenagers and children to play and meet. A skate park and children’s adventure playground. Many small independent cafes, pubs abs bars alongside the bigger chain establishments closer to town. There is a good mix of bustling town/shops/venues and quiet residential areas. Local cafes and pubs seem to be supported just as much as the chains: Ellie’s cafe crepe a la cadre (Kentish town), Camden hop house pub always had a good crowd - hosts a popular pub quiz every Tuesday and serves a wide range of food, quality drinks and cocktails. Hidden coffee was always bustling (beside the overground station). The Canal is a present way to travel by foot away from the often loud abs busy main roads. The walk to primrose hill abs Regent’s Park is manageable and enjoyable (and popular, especially in the pandemic). Though the canal has been inundated with more joggers, cyclists and walkers than usual so can get rather busy. Camden square gardens is a present place to sit abs walk, Amy Woinehouse’s old house just opposite. Overall it is a very present place to live. I have no queries about cleanliness etc. During the non pandemic times, its closeness to Camden Town means that it is often a lot busier, however this is neither a positive or a negative. Though with this can come busier roads and walkways. I enjoy the diversity of the area, it is not suited to a particular type of person be it age race etc. as some other parts of London sometimes do. There is a good sense of community

I feel as though gentrification introduce a different vibe to the area

It is not an incredibly safe area. There is a significant amount of gang activity

Transport

The area is very well connected. Many transport hubs are in close proximity.

Community

There is a lot of anti social behaviour so much so patrolling officers is a norm

Amenities

There’s an increasing move towards more gentrified shops and cafés which I welcome. Kentish Town has recently received bad press as a result of a lot of crime in the area last year. I feel as though gentrification introduce a different vibe to the area. A vibe that I think is needed at this point.
