It's defo an excellent place to live if you've got the ££ to fork out, I don't know if I'd live here unless I was sharing the costs with someone, but it's nice to have so many attractions so close by, even if COVID did kinda put a stop to it this year, but luckily I've been living in this are of London for a fair bit, so I know that it's bound to get better (though hopefully everyone doesn't move out of London by the time this whole thing blows over).
Transport
I used to switch busses at rush hour before Covid, but ever since.. It's just been bus full, bus full, bus full, constantly! So I've invested in a bike, and have just been scooting around town ever since. The cycle routes are brilliant, and the cycle superhighways really are pretty awesome once you start using them, not something you'd care about if you weren't a cyclist. Some cycle routes are seperated from the road with ballards and the like, and it gives you some nice peace of mind that you won't get run over by some half awake businessman in a beemer in the morning, but others are not, which is where you often need to keep an eye for your fellow driver (and your fellow cyclist). Overall probably the best way to get around London, definitely the fastest, and most definitely the healthiest!
Community
Lots of restaurants nearby, and a whole load of delivery apps will get it to you pretty quick so definitely a nice place to be if you're too lazy to cook like me! It's a pretty nice area to be on, me and my 3 housemates definitely enjoy it, and being that I occasionally WFH it definitely hasn't disappointing to not have to leave the house at 7.30 each day.
Amenities
Oh man where do I begin! There's just no end to the amount of excellent, and often PACKED restaurants around south bank , and especially along the Thames, nightlife could definitely do with some improvement on this side of town, but there's so many epic markets and shops to visit in the day like the Maltby, and Borough that are a pretty short walk away that it more than makes up for it!
Elephant and Castle in general is a lovely place to live, plenty to do for both young and old.
There are plenty of schools in the area that have outstanding from ofsted. For the younger crowd pursuing higher education you do have London Southbank University. Elephant and Castle in general is a lovely place to live, plenty to do for both young and old. If you do feel like a proper night out, Central London is not far.
Transport
You have the northern line that goes through the area. The closest station is Elephant and Castle, the train comes quite often, its not the modern trains so be prepared in the summer when it gets a little packed. If you don't wish to go by train you have a plenty of buses to get you wherever you want. Around the area you have 7 day buses and 3 night buses and they can take you to Charing Cross, Russell Square, Tottenham Court Road, Kings Cross and Euston. Really good for those that commute.
Community
The house/flat prices for both buying and renting can be quite high so be prepared for that. There are more couples and single people living in the area. You don't really hear much for anti-social behavior in the area, it feels pretty safe to me. Just be aware that there are more cycle and bus lanes be put in place, you don't want to get caught out. Parking wise, its fine for those that live in the area, just for your guest they will have to come and visit on the weekends (restrictions only apply Monday - Friday)
Amenities
Cute coffee shops are a few bus tops away. But it is totally worth it. Elephant and Castle has a very big Latino population and once you cross the A3 road you get this great restaurant called "La Bodegita". If you don't fancy that you also have the shopping centre where you have a variety of shops, there you can grab a coffee with a friend. Parks wise not so many as in other boroughs but you do have Geraldine Mary Hamsworth Park where the Imperial War Museum is situated.
The "Elephant Park" area has provided a range of hip cafes and eateries
There is a clear divide between the dirtier, grubbier side of Elephant & Castle (starting with Walworth Road) and the better-lit, busier side centering on the roundabout. Regeneration is ongoing -- though not necessarily for the same demographics that currently populate the area.
Transport
There is an embarassing amount of choise in terms of transport. Thameslink, two tube lines, and multiple 24 hour buses. The area is also well-connected in terms of cycling lanes. The only eyesore is the Elephant and Castle roundabout -- a clogged traffic nightmare at all hours, but one that planners have been trying to make more pedestrian-friendly.
Community
Elephant and Castle itself is extremely crowded and rowdy. Antisocial behaviour is not uncommon. Additionally, the separation between older, lower-quality blocks of flats and the newer, more expensive buildings -- starting with the Strata -- is obvious.
Amenities
The Elephant & Castle area is in flux. The "Elephant Park" area has provided a range of hip cafes and eateries in the first step towards regenerating the rather grubby and rundown Walworth area. The E&C Shopping Centre is intended to be next. However the amenities are hardly localised to the souher bound of the SE1 postcode. A short walk away, crossing over in Lambeth, is Waterloo Embankment, with the plethora of lounging spaces that have sprung up around the Millennium Eye.
Great are with Borough Market very close and lovely shops around.
