The area is great for children and pets. There is a big park for dog walks and a playground for children. There are also a handful of schools only a bus away. We do have community value as we have a market every Sunday to support local businesses. There are many empty shops which need to be filled, however the rent is too high and have been empty for years. There are too many pizza places and too little variety. There are 4 pizza places, a chicken place, a turkish place, an Indian place and a kebab place. The atmosphere depends on the time and day but all in all a decent area with everything you need.
Transport
Great proximity to bus stops and Brixton station is the nearest tube station to me (10/15 minutes from Herne hill. Herne hill station has direct links to London Victoria and Kings Cross St Pancras, Farringdon and Blackfriars. Transport in SE24 is incredibly reliable and frequent. Night buses are an issue however, I do feel unsafe waiting for a night bus and rush hour is very busy.

My street has a kebab shop and a newsagents. It’s all you need really! In all seriousness, the availability for essentials and also a treat are there, I live opposite brockwell park so it is a prime location for dog walkers or joggers. Working from home I can now go for a quick walk during my lunch break.

We have a variety of different local businesses in the area, such as an Icecream parlour, homeward shops, bicycle shop, sport and dance shops, nail salon, not to mention pubs and restaurants. Herne hill have around 5 pubs all very close together. A place I would really recommend is Parks Edge, the food never fails to disappoint. It is expensive but it is a nice treat and the staff are great. A new addition to the neighbourhood that I am a big fan of is: Brockwell Park Kebab. It is honestly amazing quality and they do not overcharge. It is what our neighbourhood needed. The meat is unbelievable and they use proper homemade or bakery bread (not sure which) not cheap pitta. It doesn’t make me feel heavy and sick after like most kebabs, think that speaks for the quality. In terms of space, we have a huge park, brockwell park. However, I would say a downside to Herne hill would be how dirty the streets are. They also need to open more shops as there are many empty buildings. The rent is too high and they’re just empty.

Since moving to Herne Hill I have loved it! It's got a really fantastic mix of all the things you want nearby: ie shops, pubs, restaurants, plant / garden centres, swimming pool, open spaces. The people I have met in the local area have all been lovely and welcoming and it would be a wonderful place if you had kids.
Transport
Herne Hill Station has Thameslink services into central London and Victoria. Additionally it is a 20 minute walk, or shorter bus to Brixton to join at the first stop of the Victoria line, so good chance of a seat! The bus services are good and run to a number of different places. The one downside is that Herne Hill does not have its own tube, but its definitely not somewhere to write off because of that!

The street I live on looks directly into Brockwell Park which is a massive plus. The street is relatively busy, but the traffic noise isn't that bad in the flat and the view and location more than make up for it. Our neighbours mostly own their flats and have all been very friendly since we moved, far more so than I have experienced in balham and Clapham. On the more mundane side the council bin collection runs weekly and has never refused to take anything we have left out.

Herne Hill has a fantastic range of local shops, pubs, and restaurants. The main hub of these is around the station (where they also hold the Sunday Market) but there are plenty of others throughout Herne Hill. There is also a Sainsburys and Tesco for any day to day shopping. For green space there cannot be many areas in London better served than Herne Hill, with Brockwell Park (containing the lido, tennis and basketball courts, football and tag rugby pitches, miniature railway etc) right on your doorstep, and Dulwich Park, Dulwich and Sydenham woods, and Ruskin Park all easily walkable.

The properties are quite good, the porters try to keep the Estate clean. No anti social behaviour. Dustbins emptied regularly. Very quiet Estate, parking wardens enforce Estate but parking is free for residents. No pubic transport on or near Estate.

Tulse Hill and West Dulwich Stations are nearby makes getting to London Bridge or Victoria easy, also buses to West End.

Living on my street the good points are some excellent, friendly neighbours. We don’t seem to have much anti social behaviour. The estate is owned by Peabody Trust and is mostly rented property.

It’s hard to live on Peabody Hill, especially if you are old or infirm, or pushing a pram. No shops nearby the nearest are at Tulse Hill, but good shops in Norwood Road. if you don’t mind a walk or Stroll it’s OK. In the local area is a very good Junior school Rosendale, and also the difficult to get in Kingsdale. Excellent Private Schools nearby . Not to Far a walk to Brockwell or Dulwich Parks. Excellent places to eat in Dulwich Village and a few nice small shops. Rosendale Pub and Alleyne’s Head both about 10 min walk away. Tulse Hill Tavern bit nearer. Good bus services from Norwood Road and two station West Dulwich and Tulse Hill are a short distance. Very nice community living on Birkbeck Triangle.
