I most like how everything I need is close together, the shops, the park and the train station are all very close. The lido in the summer is could be one if my favourite things; I love how theres just so much to do, but unfortunately, to an expense. The area is very multi cultural and diverse; there are people from all places and all ages. You can be who you are and not be judged as everybody is used to diversity. "Off The Cuff" is a trendy bar with live music that hosts No ID where local bands play mostly rock while teens and older dance and have a mosh pit while adults stand at the back at watch. It's extremely fun and definitely worth the £4 needed to enter. One bad thing is that there are thieves and quite a few homeless people. A guy actually told me he was planning on stealing my bike before I came to unlock it. He walk around Herne Hill and upper Tulse Hill with a balaclava rested on his head like a hat and sells stolen bikes to locals. So if you have a nice bike, bring a good lock. Overall, I love this area and plan on living here as long as possible.
Transport
Herne hill has it's own station with the southeastern line and Thames link. The trains are reliable and the platform is well cleaned and in good condition. Many buses pass through Herne Hill although there can be terrible traffic sometimes and when there is, your better off walking or taking the train. The best way to get around herne hill is on a bike or scooter. It's a life saver being able to skip traffic and get anywhere you want with reliable timings. Overall, theres good public transport only that the buses are slow when there is traffic which is usually on Saturdays.
Community
My road is quite quiet mostly, with occasional wails from foxes in the night, bin collectors come once a week and there is decent parking availability. Most of the people that live on my road are extremely friendly. There are many couples and families and we have a street party most years where we shit off the street with the council's permission and everyone gets together and socialises with food and lots of activities where kids can play and meet other kids that live on the street. Anyone and everyone is welcome.
Amenities
Herne Hill has absolutely everything an area needs. It has: A train station, mini supermarkets, corner shops, pubs, restaurants, a huge park, a farmers market every Sunday, barbers, a post office, a range of schools nearby, bakery shops as well as butchers and a lot of other interesting businesses. The is a bar with live music and a hidden stage beside it which hosted many events before covid called Off The Cuff. Brockwell park has it's own bmx track along with tennis courts, a cafe, a paddling pool, a flower garden to relax in, a playground and even a BETTER(a company) gym, and a large swimming pool in The Brockwel Lido. On sunny days the park and herne hill centre can get very busy but it's what you would expect in London anyways. The one thing that it's missing (but is definitely not an essential) is an indoor skate park. It would give the young generation a good reason to get outside, find passions and excersize even when it rains.
The ins and outs of Brixton, the best place South of the river!
All in all, my favourite thing about Brixton is that it’s area with a melting pot of different cultures and backgrounds, which is what makes it a uniquely vibrant place to live. You won’t see me moving away anytime soon! The atmosphere in Brixton is definitely one of rapid gentrification - you can see the way in which it has gone rapidly upmarket in recent years, but has worked hard to retain it’s original character, and not lose sight of its roots. As with most inner London places, I wouldn’t necessarily called Brixton the most child friendly area, but then again I haven’t personally researched the local schools, which I’m sure are very good. Objectively speaking, Brixton’s probably not the safest area either, but I personally rarely feel unsafe in Brixton due to the volume of people always out and about. Also, I’d say it’s definitely good for pets with Brockwell Park so close by.
Transport
First things first, it’s transport heaven, with the super frequent Victoria Line (you never seem to be waiting longer than a minute!), and in non-COVID times, there is night tube every 10 minutes which is great. Brixton is very well served by buses, which go just about anywhere. I work in East London, and it is a little frustrating that the overground line passes over Brixton, but there is no station - if I want to use it I have to walk to Clapham High Street which is not ideal. Also, I’m a keen cycler and don’t feel like the 2 Santander Bike docking stations in central Brixton is anywhere near sufficient for the demand they get - they’re always empty in the mornings! I would like to see maybe 2-3 more dotted around. Brixton rush hour is not too much of an issue as it’s the end of the Victoria Line so I always get a seat, although the times I have used a rush hour bus there is definitely always a lot of traffic. I like the cycle superhighways near Brixton, they make me feel a lot safer when biking.

I live on Atlantic Road, so there is never a quiet moment! Either trains are coming and going, or people are using the shops below/going to Brixton Market or the Village Market. We have double glazing so I don’t really mind it, if anything I enjoy the character living in Central Brixton brings. I don’t own a car so can’t comment on parking availability, but the benefit of living just off Brixton Market is instead of having our own wheelie bin, the protocol is to leave our bin bags on the street where they are collected multiple times a day, so we never have an issue with things like running out of space in our bin. Most of the neighbouring shops haven’t converted their upstairs into apartments, so besides the flat above us we have no immediate neighbours, which is great. Both us and the flat above rent, and all of us are in our 20s.
Amenities
I live in SW9, Brixton, and it really is food heaven. I always pick up my fresh fruit and veg from Brixton Market on Electric Avenue, and it’s great to support the local traders. Also, every world cuisine you could want is in Brixton Village Market - my favourite is Okan, which does Japanese Okonomiyaki pancakes. Brixton also has all the convenience stores like Pret and Brixton, which is great when I’m dashing to work. The charity shops (Barnardos, British Heart Foundation etc) are a great browse, and always have some interesting clothing/furniture finds. I love the Ritzy cinema too, it’s great for seeing arthouse films as well as new releases. For green space, Brockwell Park is (literally) a breath of fresh air from the hustle and bustle of central Brixton - it’s great for morning runs, and some parts of the park give fab views of the London skyline. One amenity that would be nice is a Morrisons close by, since I get 10% off shopping with my NHS staff card.
The area is quiet, but could do with being a bit more lively.
The area is quiet, but could do with being a bit more lively. It is very safe, and has a family feel
Transport
Near denmark hill station. The overground is fine, but it would be nice to be connected to a tube for ease
Community
It is nice and quiet, and the council are good. It is mainly local families, but the area has changed quite a bit
Amenities
There are a few places nearby, but a broader variety in Herne Hill. The quality is good- often family run places, that care about service
local shops are magnificent
