The thing I like most about the area is there is plenty to access close by in terms of shops and travel but you also aren't far from other areas such as Clapham, Brixton or Streatham meaning you have options whether using public transport or driving. The atmosphere I get from the local area is very much young professionals who are either looking for somewhere a little quieter to live but still have to option of bars and restaurants close by to go out on the weekends. In addition to this though the area is occupied by young families with options schools in the area and a primary school just round the corner from where I live. It appears to be a great place to start a family and I would describe it as upmarket. I haven't seen anything in this area to make me think it would be unsafe for children and I would definitely class it as a pet safe area with the common for dog walking and low traffic roads for cats to roam outside.
Transport
I think transportation links in Balham are excellent. Buses to Clapham, Tooting and Streatham are quite regular and with Balham being on the Northern Line getting into Central is easy enough and having National Rail there gives plenty of options for quick and easy travel to Clapham Junction for the Overground or Victoria Station. There are some issues however, with the tube in the morning rush hour (pre Covid mainly). Between the hours of half 7 to at least 9am there is always a huge mass of people waiting on the stairs of both entrances to Balham station sometimes extending into the ticket hall of the train station. This is due to keeping numbers on the platform to a safe level which is understandable but once on the platform there can be 3 to 4 tubes pass through the station before you even have a chance of squeezing on to an already cramped tube. Given the number of people commuting on southern rail and then using Balham tube station to go into Central and the fact the Northern Line is already a busy line, it can prove quite frustrating making it to the platform after queueing above ground to then have to wait for 4 or 5 trains to pass you below ground. Even with staffs best efforts to stem the flow of people I have been on the platform when people just cannot get onto tubes as they come in meaning the platform fills and fills to a point where I am surprised someone hasn't been injured by a train given how close people are pushed to the edge of the platform.

On my street there is a mixture of owners and renters with I would say the majority being owners. There is a healthy mix of families and young professionals. The area is lovely and quiet with little to no noise in the evenings and night. Parking availability can be tricky on weekdays and evenings, I think at present there are just enough cars on our road to mean that you can at least park on the road you live on as opposed to having to look at the next road over. Anymore cars in households and I think parking would be very stretched.

The range and quality of shops restaurants and bars in Balham is great on such a short stretch of high street. There are plenty of bars to choose from and some which (post-covid) you can have a full night out in, without venturing into central which is great on your doorstep. In regards to open spaces, with Tooting Bec Common there is plenty of outdoor space to wander around which stretch down to Tooting and Streatham giving you plenty of options for shopping or eating. If I were to say any amenities were missing I would say affordable gyms. There is Anytime Fitness on the high street as well as another Anytime Fitness a walk/cycle away from where I live however, affordability and not being tied into a contract is something I look for in a gym, as I may not be able to attend everyday and with my work schedules the flexibility of being able to cancel and then rejoin at anytime without fees and charges is key.

Balham used to be known as The Gateway to the South, but it has grown well and improved a lot within 15 years. It is a very welcoming and relaxed area to live and continues to grow in popularity. I will live here for many more years to cone.
Transport
Balham is a great transport hub. You have access to the overground train which gets you into Victoria or Waterloo within 15 mins, there is the Northern line and a vast selection of bus options. The area is well connected.
Community
My street has the typical mix of family homeowners and groups of renters. It has a nice feel to the neighbourhood. The streets are cleaned regularly and refuse collection is regular. Parking is fine as it is all permit, so eliminates commuter parking problems. The only downside is that the pavements could do with an upgrade!
Amenities
Balham has a great mix of independent shops and bars sitting alongside more well known brands of establishments. The area has changed a great deal over the last 15 years and it now boasts a ‘feel good’ vibe that fits well for either young single professionals or large families. Whether it’s a gift from a craft shop, coffee and cake from a coffee shop, drinks with a group of friends, a freshly cooked hangover breakfast or some good quality meat to feed the family on Sunday, or just laze about in Tooting Common...Balham will not disappoint.

I think that the amenities in my local area are mixed in quality. The local shops are average in quality . Their needs to be more variation and choice. However, there are some nice pubs and parks within the area and this allows for some nice sight seeing. Their are also a lot of green open spaces and greenery which makes everything look nicer. All in all I think it is average.
