The most I like about the area is how close it is to central London, without having to deal with all the problems

The most I like about the area is how close it is to central London, without having to deal with all the problems that living in central London presents, such as very busy public transport and noise/light pollution. The area is undergoing gentrification slightly in some parts but still has some council flats and old housing. It is very suitable for children and pets, with several parks and playgrounds, and good primary and secondary schools nearby.

Transport

The area is very well serviced by both buses and the London Underground. There are bus stops around every two minutes (walking), with buses arriving every 2-7 minutes. The buses, such as the 47 or the 188, can take you straight into central London and go on all through the night (with reduced frequency). The nearby station (Bermondsey station) only has the jubilee line, but it is only a few stops from considerably bigger stations with multiple lines, and as the jubilee line goes straight into central London, often there is no need to change line. The jubilee line trains come around every 2 minutes and also continue into the night with reduced frequency. There are also very large, monitored bike lanes, with their own traffic lights, all down the main road, so it is very easy to cycle if that is your normal mode of transport. The only issue with public transport in the area is how congested it gets during rush hour. It’s a really huge issue and can delay journey times by up to an hour, with both the Jubilee line waiting times becoming incredibly long, and the buses being stuck in very slow moving traffic.

Community

There is limited parking availability as the area is serviced so we’ll by public transport. Bin collections are every Thursday and I have never had any issues with them. The area is close to several schools so is generally packed with teenagers around 9am and 3pm, but they mostly keep to themselves and do not present any danger. There are mostly families living in the area but there are some new buildings close to the river which have young couples living there too.

Amenities

There is a good range of all types of food shops! The area is quite diverse so you have access to most types of cuisines, such as Japanese, Italian, Indian and Turkish, and simple chicken and chips if you’re looking for that. There is a really big park (Southwark Park) about 5minutes away, which is really pretty all year round and has a cute flower garden next to the lake (which has lots of pretty swans!), featuring lots of different types of plants and herbs, and a cool sundial. There is also good access to supermarkets and corner shops, with both a Tesco and a Sainsbury’s nearby. As it is so close to the river, there is a really cute scenic route you can take off of Mill Street, with views of the old docks and the London skyline, which takes you along several (slightly pricey) riverfront Italian restaurants all the way to Tower Bridge.

This location is amazing especially if you have friends or family coming from abroad, your have some of the major tourist spots like the tower of London just a bridge walk away.

As a young couple it is really great for socialising. As mentioned before it just has such a variety of places to eat, you never get bored. I have friends that have children and they say that the schools are really good. So if you have younger children, there are two primary schools nearby and if they are in the late teens there is St Michael's Catholic College. As mentioned before there is a park nearby for those that have dogs.

Transport

Less than a 5 minute walk you have a bus top for (42,78,108 & 343) that can take to New Cross. You have also the underground ( District and Circle Line), Rail and the DLR, commuting is made so much easier, even though it is a little pricy but its worth it. You will get traffic during peak times, but that is unavoidable as you like in central London.

Community

Its a Monday to Friday parking so if you have guests on the weekends they can get a spot. I would say the area is rather safe, never felt scared at night. You will hear the usual honking as tower bridge road is right in front of you. The neighbours are a mixture as you have some flats and houses, but more couples.

Amenities

This location is amazing especially if you have friends or family coming from abroad, your have some of the major tourist spots like the tower of London just a bridge walk away. It has a variety of different restaurants to suit different pallets. You have Baluchi (Indian cuisine) or Hing Lee (Chinese cuisine) at just walking distance. They come in handy when you don't fancy cooking. There is also Potters fields Park that makes an early morning run easier as it is just a stones throw away. You also have a Sainsbury's Local where you can pick up last minutes lunches. Everything is very convenient.

Great place to visit

Great location and links to central London. Only 1 stop from London Bridge and 3 from Waterloo. Great for visiting but be wary of living there.

Transport

Jubilee line runs through the area and all buses can bring you towards central London. Overground goes through Canada Water if you need more access to south London.

Community

While the location is nice and very close to central London there are anti-social elements. There have been fights with weapons during the day and generally the side streets can feel unsafe at night.

Amenities

The nearby shops and Pubs are great, Canada Water is nearby with frequent buses in that direction. Also maltby market on weekends is a must.
