Ugly but convenient place to live

Really ugly but super convenient place to live. A bit dodgy but fine.

Transport

Very convenient. We've got the tube, overground and buses all nearby. Cleanliness is average for London transport (not great, but bearable). I don't drive, but Holloway Road is always very busy. Holloway Road is also a bit terrifying to cycle down though so cycle lanes there could be nice. There are good cycle routes somewhat parallel though which is great. It's very convenient to cycle down to the city centre. More bike shelters would be appreciated though. Storing all your housemates' bikes in the flat and bringing them up and down the stairs everyday can be a hassle and the area is definitely not safe enough to lock them up outside.

Community

Bin collections are fine. They always come on time and you just leave everything outside you house. Not really sure who actually lives on this street. There are always a lot of old guys doing not much but sitting on the benches and talking to one another all day. A lot of South Asian families as well I think. The men are also on the street benches a lot. That community feeling is quite nice I guess. (Though it's not one I'm particularly part of.)

Amenities

Great selection of supermarkets and I particularly love the wet market on seven sisters' road. They're mostly small grocers run by local Asian families and they have a really great (and cheap!) selection of produce including things that are harder to find in chain supermarkets. And unlike the typical "indie" type of food stores, they're cheap and not pretentiously posh or overpriced. It's not pretty and a bit chaotic but it does remind me of the outdoor markets at home in the Philippines. There are lots of restaurants around too that are decently priced. They're all really diverse in origin which is fun, and the food is pretty good. In terms of open spaces, there are a good number of parks. Finsbury Park is a bit dodgy at night but it's big. Highbury fields is a bit nicer. There's also the really lovely Parkland walk that's just this random corridor of green between Finsbury Park all the way to Hampstead Heath. It's like a little country walk in the middle of London... Arsenal Stadium is actually quite a fun hangout space in and of itself. It's always fun to just walk around and look at the skaters and random workout classes going on, and there's shelter from the rain which makes for a good back-up plan for meeting people outdoors during these COVID times. There's Islington library nearby, it's well-connected to public transport, and there's even a sports and leisure centre so really no amenities I can think of that are missing. The only thing I can think of is that it's really not the prettiest area and that all these things are usually by quite busy roads (i.e. Holloway Road and Seven Sisters Road) but I guess it keeps things relatively cheap.

I'm so glad I moved to this area

Many people think you can't have a sense of community in London but this area has taught me that this is wrong. If you put the effort in, you can build great relationships with your neighbours and local community. It's such a joy to have local friends, especially during Covid.

Transport

There are a huge amount of bus options available in the area, considering the fact we have several important roads running through. There are also a good amount of nightbus routes running through. We also have overground links and the Piccadilly line. Victoria line and Northern line are not far as well. There are always a good range of hireable bikes littering the street! I have never had a problem with the transport in the area.

Community

I don't drive but when drivers visit, I don't usually have any difficulty finding them a spot. I can use council vouchers for visitors in cars. Bins are collected weekly and we have the option to separate food waste as well as recycling and general rubbish. On my road there is a mix of families and shared houses. There are the right amount of people that have lived in the area for ages to give the place a community feeling. I take part in some volunteer activities in my community and I've found everyone to be very welcoming.

Amenities

Holloway is a great area for shops and other amenities. On Seven Sisters Road there is a massive Morrisons with a car park. There is also the Nags Head market where there are lots of grocers and a halal butcher and fishmonger. Further along the street there is a Cypriot grocer which does a really good range of vegetables and fruit at good prices. At the junction of Hornsey Road there is Hua Run, a Chinese supermarket which crams a large range of goods into a small space. Nags Head market and the corner of Hornsey and Seven Sisters are also home to two food stall areas. These mini restaurants offer takeaway and some have seating. They're honestly such amazing quality, value and range of cuisines. I was so delighted when I discovered them. Aside from food, Seven Sisters Road Holloway also has a lot of other useful shops. You can buy textiles and craft supplies, get your phone fixed and buy various cables, get a deal on furniture at the BHS shop, and find cheap things at Poundland. Every weekend a large car boot sale is held in a car park just off the Seven Sisters Road and it's such fun wandering around. The pubs are generally fine, but the Swimmer is a great pub with some outside space and board games. I suppose two drawbacks of the area are the actual Seven Sisters Road and Holloway Road. They are very busy arterial roads. On the other hand though, you can catch a bus to pretty much anywhere! There are lots of little parks scattered about but there isn't a big open space as far as I'm aware. All in all I think this area has everything you'd need and more.

Just an average London Street, nothing to write home about

Mostly students. Too many students and too many single mothers

Transport

Transport is amazing. Stoke Newington not too far away. But at the end of the day, it's Holloway innit so you get what you get. Buses are too packed though so that's always an issue

Community

Council very helpful with all other amenities and people round here are very liberal. We have a healthy mix of people or all various ages and ethnicities living on my street

Amenities

There are decent shops around and the high street round these parts is okay. I particularly like the dentists however they can be a bit rude sometimes
