I love NW5 for many reasons. Highlights include being within walking distance to Hampstead Heath, Waterlow Park and Highgate village as well as being very accessible to Regents Park, Regents Canal, Kings Cross and central London. The local atmosphere is friendly as far as London neighbourhoods go, naturally you feel it more if you shop locally, eat or buy coffee at one of the locals - Bean About Town, Kentish Town Stores and Saint Espresso are all great coffee shops with very friendly staff. The area isn’t too trendy in a hipster way, but is cool in its own vibrant, diverse demographic. It’s also somewhere between a ‘gentrified’ area and not, which gives it a more relaxed energy without pretentiousness or student nightlife. The area is suitable for most, including families with children and pets as there are nice green spaces, nurseries and lots of big Victorian style houses to accommodate.
Transport
Wherever you are in NW5, chances are you won’t be far from one of the nearby overground or tube stations (or if buses are your thing there are some great routes into central and east London). Kentish Town tube station offers the northern line which is convenient either as direct route or to change at a different station. There is also the overground station connected to this, along with my favourite mode of transport - Thameslink! As well as other overground trains to Luton, South London and other places further afield. Then you also have within short walking distance depending on where you’re located, Kentish Town West and Gospel Oak overground stations which you can hop on to East or West London in much less time than you’d imagine. Rush hour is of course a thing, although the overground and thameslink aren’t as busy as tube stations. If you can leave after 9am it’s much nicer, and same again later on in the day. There are also great cycle lanes and quiet routes into the city, as more places become cycle friendly it’s becoming increasingly the best way to travel.
Community
The area is fairly mixed in terms of who lives here, which I think is what makes it so great! There are families, young professionals, older home owners and generally everything in between. Not a visible student community although I’m sure there are some. The street is relatively calm, despite being so close to the high street and with passing vehicles there’s generally very little traffic noise. Depending which part you live on there is generally street parking available, although many have parking at the back or in a side space. Bin collections are weekly and reliable, and social behaviour is completely fine. The occasional disorderly person as with most places, but nothing significant.
Amenities
Kentish Town has a wonderful range of local shops, restaurants and bars along the main high street to suit all tastes and needs. The main high street is the most popular area, however you are also within walking distance to Tufnell Park and Brecknock Road which have more independent shops, grocery stores and local businesses. I often find myself spoilt for choice, which isn’t a bad thing! The variation makes it a wonderful place to live, and local bars such as Ladies and Gents, Nowhere Special and The Pineapple pub add to this excitement and offer great local hangouts.
Everything you need right by the park
The area north of NW5 is very safe, quite posh and traditional, although quite multicultural as well in some places, especially around the tube stations. It is nice with children with several schools a walkable distance, and perfect for pets: it isn't rare to see cats walking around, and of course Hampstead Heath a few minutes away is dog heaven with a lot of furry friends walking around. I really like the feeling of being in a village with everything close and the park with a beautiful view on the city, all while being very close to Central London with transportation.
Transport
I find transportation very good. The tube (Kentish Town and Tufnell Park) could be a 10-15 minute walk depending on where you live in NW5, but there are buses everywhere, going everywhere in London. I find them really practical and cheap, and they run really often even at night. With the overground as well there are many options for transportation that are reliable, safe and clean. However during rush hours I would recommend the underground to go to Central London, as traffic can be unpredictable and buses can take longer than planned, so there are better for short distances.
Community
In my street there are mainly families and empty nesters or retired people, there doesn't seem to be many young children though so it is also very quiet but still lively. The main streets might be noisy but mine and most streets around are very quiet. I have seen no problem with parking availability, bin collection or anything else, and the streets are always very clean.
Amenities
There is everything someone could need around Kentish Town underground station: shops from the cheapest (Lidl) to the highest quality/organic cute shops and everything in between, bars around the main street, and every food option throughout the neighbourhood so no need to walk too far. There are also a lot of nice restaurants and shops around Tufnell Park station for those who live more north of NW5. You won't find much for clothes shopping but there's several charity shops, libraries, and also medical centres, banks, or anything needed. For events there is the O2 Forum, and Hampstead Heath is a few minutes away (the best part!) so you could easily never leave the neighbourhood. Transportation is really good as well with the Northern line, Overground, and buses going everywhere in London. NW5 is the perfect place to have a more relaxed lifestyle, by the park, with quiet streets but every amenity a short walk away - all while living only 20 minutes from central London and a walking distance from Camden. It might not be as vibrant as other London neighbourhoods though, maybe more adapted for families and professionals than students.
Well connected but not very safe
I don't feel very safe in my area - especially at night. I would not walk around alone. I have witnessed people harassed. However, some of the shop owners are lovely and welcoming. I think the area is in need of regeneration and it is not very trendy. It can be very quiet. The area is suitable for pets. I like most that the area is well connected - as I don't have a car and travelling is the most important thing to me. Secondly, there is a police station close by which makes me feel slightly safer - for when I run into trouble.
Transport
The connections where are live are really good. There is kentish town tube station and national railway not more than a 10 minute walk away and an overground station too. Many bus stops around the area. Very well connected - easy to travel without a car
Community
There is not much traffic noise - the area is quiet and there are some nice people about. Bin collections are regular.
Amenities
There are a range of supermarkets and quite a few bars but more pubs. The supermarkets are good as there are quite a few different ones - so you can find what you need. Thete are a lot of butchers and private stores as well with plenty of good products. There are some open spaces however they dont feel very safe. The restaurants and pubs tend to have a large variety of god quality food that accomdate most dietary requirements. I feel that the area doesn't feel very safe though because of the types of people about. I don't feel we are missing any amenities- maybe a shopping centre for clothes would be nice. There are plenty of charity shops that may have what you need clothing wise though.
The most that I love about my area is the restaurant and that good links
