Compared to neighbouring Tooting, Balham has a sense of quiet and also one of a strong community. Most of the houses and gardens are very well kept. We don’t seem to have any problems with street crime and the streets are well looked after with very little litter.
Transport
Balham having a tube station is a huge convenience for locals and visitors. There are a fair number of bus routes serving us but the adjustment to the main road to include a lane is a contentious issue as it has heavily restricted parking- even the post office is now unable to accept parcels as their vans can not park outside. There are some Boris Bikes, but certainly not an abundance of them

Sistova Road, for some reason unknown to me, does not use wheelie bins but leaves bins and rubbish bags in the street. This undoubtedly attracts vermin and looks unsightly. The surrounding streets are mostly inhabited by families (given the quality of the local schools) who own

Balham has a good mix of chain restaurants and independent ones. Pizza Express, Franco Manca, Exhibit, L’Osteria, Trap Kitchen, Meghan’s and Nandos all sit very comfortably with one another and are invariably busy and with a good atmosphere. Although South London has a name for being a little on the rougher side. Balham feels very safe. Acquisitive crimes such as burglaries and car thefts have seen a rise in the last year or two but it still feels safe. I’ve certainly walked from the tube station at all hours and haven’t felt at risk. We’re fairly well served by buses but most people rely on the tube. Also, in Balham, there are streets with fewer than average parking restrictions. Lately, there has been a lot of pedestrianisation of the main roads. Whilst this has helped local businesses to operate (and also maintain a sense of a thriving community), it has aggrieved a number of drivers,. We’re lucky to be served by two good sized supermarkets, with a handful of delicatessens, butchers and the like

Balham used to be known as The Gateway to the South, but it has grown well and improved a lot within 15 years. It is a very welcoming and relaxed area to live and continues to grow in popularity. I will live here for many more years to cone.

Balham is a great transport hub. You have access to the overground train which gets you into Victoria or Waterloo within 15 mins, there is the Northern line and a vast selection of bus options. The area is well connected.
Community
My street has the typical mix of family homeowners and groups of renters. It has a nice feel to the neighbourhood. The streets are cleaned regularly and refuse collection is regular. Parking is fine as it is all permit, so eliminates commuter parking problems. The only downside is that the pavements could do with an upgrade!
Amenities
Balham has a great mix of independent shops and bars sitting alongside more well known brands of establishments. The area has changed a great deal over the last 15 years and it now boasts a ‘feel good’ vibe that fits well for either young single professionals or large families. Whether it’s a gift from a craft shop, coffee and cake from a coffee shop, drinks with a group of friends, a freshly cooked hangover breakfast or some good quality meat to feed the family on Sunday, or just laze about in Tooting Common...Balham will not disappoint.

I think that the amenities in my local area are mixed in quality. The local shops are average in quality . Their needs to be more variation and choice. However, there are some nice pubs and parks within the area and this allows for some nice sight seeing. Their are also a lot of green open spaces and greenery which makes everything look nicer. All in all I think it is average.
