I love Balham because there’s so much to offer ( chain and independent restaurants of all cuisines, multiple supermarkets, green space etc) and because it just feels so relaxed and happy. People are always out socialising but the more residential streets are pretty quiet for London and you won’t find someone throwing up on your door step. It’s a great place for animals as you have the choice of three Commons available and most restaurants welcome pets. There are a few schools around here too and loads of families have put down roots here. The streets are well lit and I’ve always felt safe here.
Transport
Balham has the Northern line and train services so you can easily get to the City and West End as well as Fulham/Chelsea and further afield via Clapham Junction in particular. Bus routes from here are also pretty good but sadly we don’t have Santander bikes! Commuting is pretty ideal from here, never really had any issues apart from the typical crowds!
Community
Our street is quiet in terms of residents (mostly families and young people). There are cars going by obviously but never too fast (speed bumps etc), we have one street between us and the train tracks which are audible but only as a low rumble.

Balham has everything you need + could want: supermarkets include Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, coop, M&S towards Clapham South; then there are all the shops like Oliver Bonas and TK Maxx which just make shopping in Balham that little bit more interesting and means you can find almost anything you might need without having to travel far. Obviously being on the Northern line is great for commuters, and the train gets you to Clapham Junction and Victoria very quickly so you get to be out of the hustle and bustle of the city but it doesn’t take long to get in, likewise if you want to escape London it’s easy. I’d say Hildreth St is a hot spot for restaurants (vegan included), weekend brunch, and there’s a plant market there daily! If you’re looking for green space then Tooting Bec Common is just down the road from The Bedford (famous for its Banana Cabaret)! If you don’t fancy that then Clapham Common is a 15/20 min walk away and Wandsworth Common is close too! The only thing I think Balham is missing is a Cinema to be honest, but that could even take away from the charm of Balham. It’s got a really amazing, chilled, young vibe. Wouldn’t live anywhere else!

I like Balham alot, it has everything you could possibly need from supermarkets, to restaurants and quirky pubs and cafes. Transport links are good and a sense of community here, particularly in the summer is where Balham shines when everyone is piled out onto the streets drinking and eating! Great area for young professionals as very up and coming yet feels like a town rather than London. Less 'concrete', feels like a safe area for women, young children. Great for anyone with pets as 3 large commons nearby.

Good - parking, bin collections is very often, no problem with overflows. Relatively quiet as just behind main road. Bad - As I live on a ground floor flat, people always buzz and can hear neighbours above and people entering/exiting building. Sometimes hear sirens at night. Mostly renters where I live but all quiet and keep selves to themselves, either young couples/professionals or elderly. Some young families nearby.

There is a good range of convenience stores and supermarkets within a 10 min walk: M&S, Coop, Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Aldi. Short walk from 3 huge commons, nice to get a change of scenery and some greenery! Clapham Common, Wandsworth Common and Tooting Common all within 15 mins. Transport links are excellent. 5 mins to Balham tube (northern line, also a 24hr service), National rail links to central London, Clapham Junction and suburbs. Many bus routes into neighbouring towns are very frequent. Neighbourhood itself is a very friendly area, young professional demographic with some families too. Plenty of cafes, restaurants, bars and cosy pubs complete with pub gardens too! Hildreth street is brilliant, its pedestrianised so that all the eateries open out their seating onto the cobbled road, farmers market and plants sold here every week. Only thing missing for me is, more food takeaway shops e.g. LEON, ITSU and essentials stores e.g. WILKO

The best thing about living in Balham is probably the transport links. We have a good amount of buses and there is a train and underground station very close to each other.

My street definitely gets quite busy on the weekends as it’s very close to lots of food shops. There’s a nursery just down the road and a dentist so you do see lots of people walking round.

Area is decent, lots of food shops situated very locally, lots of take aways too which is very handy when ordering in. Loads of bars on the high street too but I do prefer going to different areas.
