The thing I most like about the area is the high number of shops and restaurants, which means I do not have to travel far to get the things I need.

The thing I most like about the area is the high number of shops and restaurants, which means I do not have to travel far to get the things I need. The thing I dislike most is there is quite a lot of noise and pollution from the high density of traffic. There are also quite a lot of abandoned buildings around which make the streets look messy and there is quite a lot of litter on the streets. Regeneration is required. Transport connections are good, but bike lanes could be improved. It is a great area for students and workers but less suitable for children as it gets quite busy and there are not many open spaces. There are places to walk dogs and go for runs along the river, which is very common for people to do.

Transport

There are many bus stops on my road which give access too central London and they are quite reliable, coming around every ten minutes. I also live a short walk from two tube stations. Cycle lanes in the area where I live could be better. Although they are present there are often vehicles stopped within them. Also at roundabouts, particularly the double roundabout on Lillie Road/North End Road, cars do not give cyclists space while turning which feels quite dangerous. It would also be useful if there were more places to lock bikes, and if these spaces had cameras, as bike theft is high in London. Santander bikes also are popular, with many pick up points around. During rush hour times North End Road and Fulham Palace Road get very busy, often coming to a standstill. The high number of cars creates high levels of pollution and is very noisy.

Community

There is widespread parking on my road, but it is expensive, so people tend to not use the available spaces until the evening, where it is free. The noise from traffic is quite loud but is quieter during the evening. There is, however, noise from building construction which is frequent. Bin collection is weekly for both bins. A couple of times bin days have been missed, which has made it very difficult as I live with six other students. Also on bin days the streets become filled with rubbish, which sometimes spills onto the pavement. The area has a very mixed demographic, with a high number of students and renters. I have not experienced any antisocial behavior.

Amenities

There are a very large number of local food shops within walking distance of where I live including two Tesco stores, two Co-ops a Waitrose, Sainsbury's and a Nisa Local. There are also food markets on North End Road, which is just down the road. Around Fulham there are restaurants of all types including Greek, Indian, Vegan, middle Eastern and Italian. There are also hardware stores, garden stores and kitchen stores all nearby. There are multiple open spaces around but they are quite limited in size. The river is a ten minute walk away which is where I go to get away from the city atmosphere. The river can get quite busy during hot days but there are always places to sit and chill by walking down the river slightly. The most popular area around is on North End Road as there are many shops and restaurants on it and also pubs, which get quite busy at night.

It’s quite a mature and affluent vibe here; restaurants can price out younger couples. Although I think the area has seen an influx of affluent young families in recent years. If you want nightclubs or your doorstep this is not the place; pubs close at midnight on the whole. Most people seem to have either children and or a dog. In the summer people enjoy Dog walks along and or drinks down by the river. Which is lovely but can get very busy. There’s a local sports centre where people play cricket and tennis etc. It’s very quaint down by the duck pond in the centre of Barnes and has food markets etc. Also there’s a nice festive vibe in the winter where you can choose from a number of pubs to enjoy a mulled wine. On the whole a lovely family area but pretty expensive to live here!!

Transport

Barnes is very well connected to central London if you’re willing to walk over the bridge to Hammersmith Tube stop. The bridge is closed which some have found has made their commute into town much harder. But those willing to walk over the bridge won’t be affected. Buses run regularly through Barnes in all directions. If you commute out towards Surrey as I do, the A3 provides a rapid route south of London into Surrey. Castelnau did have a heavy traffic issue at certain times of day before the bridge closed. If you commute into town you may want to check out when the bridge is set to reopen!

Community

Arundel Terrace is a very quiet Street to live on considering its proximity to Hammersmith. The street is a dead end so doesn’t get traffic passing through and finding a parking space is rarely an issue. Residents seem to be made up of a mixture of families, couples and retirees. People are friendly and often greet each other on the street. There’s a line of communal bins at the end of the street for mansion block flats which are collected weekly. We recently had an issue with the bin men refusing to pick up the large stack of cardboard for recycling so this piled up. Luckily some friendly neighbours worked together to clear it up; not an unusual display of community spirit on Arundel Terrace. Anti-social behaviour has not been an issue for me but graffiti is increasingly noticeable and I know of a mugging nearby, a bike theft on the street and a number plate stolen from a car. Arguably issues faved by any London street.

Amenities

Arundel Terrace is situated a stones throw from a row of handy shops including a pub, pharmacy, corner shop, post office, a couple of cafes; there’s a superb Indian restaurant, an Italian and a Chinese takeaway. We are also just a 10 minute walk over the bridge to all the shops etc in Hammersmith and a 20 minute walk back into Barnes village which has a number of pubs, restaurants and a few boutique style shops. If you are looking for busy bars - Barnes is not the place. Amenities are designed to suit family lifestyles.
