A very pleasant area to live in with families, it is vibrant with a great sense of community, with welcoming green open spaces and centres. Not always as safe as one might expect though as I was mugged by two people on a motorbike who tried to steal my rucksac when I was riding a bike near Blythe Road/Lyon's walk to go home in the evening about four years ago, and as I happened to pass someone who had a very inappropriate behaviour in Girdlers Road in broad afternoon daylight before entering a house about two years ago as I was coming back home... Apart from these two incidents, I find living in Brook Green a good experience given all the advantages of this charming area.
Transport
The transport links are excellent, with access to the Piccadilly, District/Circle, Hammersmith and City lines in 3to20min walk, there are plenty of buses routes. On one side, I wish there was a shorter journey to reach North West London faster as some of our family members live there (but I guess going to the opposite side takes longer). On the other side, going from Kensington Olympia to the South West of England is easier and faster due to good trainlinks. The commute to my work is all right, but when taking the Central line, it is best to avoid peak times as the waiting time to get a space on a train coach to central london can feel very, very long. Other than this, the transport links are appreciated.
Community
We find owners, renters, families with young and older children, elderly people, young professionals, couples in our area, so it feels like a real village with all generations. It's nice to be able to gather to the parks and the Farmer's market. What I enjoy less is the noise from cars and motorbikes on the street side, and loud conversations/loud music on the garden side especially during the summer. I find the green spaces enjoyable. Also, the fact that houses have quite a few flights of stairs to reach the entrance doors is not very practical, especially with a pram under the rain when coming back with our weekly shopping, for instance. I'm afraid to say that we pass quite a few dog wastes on the pavement despite the bins and signs, and every now and then rubbish on the floor that stays there several days despite the local council hard work to stop it. But the sense of community, the beauty of the area with its greens, the access to amenities and good transport connections overtake these.
Amenities
In Brook Green, you'll find a large range of amenities and it feels like a dynamic village. Pubs are part of the daily life and located in residential streets for some, near a park or other shops, bringing spaces to gather and eat/drink to the local community (they serve delicious food, and I've even organised gatherings for special occasions in one of them I particularly like). Local shops are handy (one of them quite pricy, so I prefer shopping elsewhere when possible, and another one offers a wide range of Italian and French cuisine goods that are of high quality). The community centre is at the heart of Brook Green and is able to help many families in varied ways (I have made great use of its courses when my little one was born, and found a welcoming space to meet other parents with their children, learn on parenting and children activities, and even to study quietly), and I recommend it - people do care. The farmer's market is also one of the musts in our area, full of delicious food and drinks, delicacies, meeting sellers and friends in a relaxed atmosphere. There are several nurseries and very good schools in the area, and the green next to the church and lively parish offers a wonderful space (with beautiful huge trees) where the local people gather (there are also tennis courts and a play area for children). It would be nice to find a bookshop, as the nearest ones are closer to Hammersmith or High Street Kensington. Overall, everything is accessible in a short walk, and I fing living in Brook Green most pleasant.
For me it has always been a great location and there have always been lots of useful shops and restaurants
I have lived on this street since 1972 and it has slowly moved up-market as people were priced out of Kensington and Holland Park. For me it has always been a great location and there have always been lots of useful shops and restaurants, the Bush Theatre, Bush Hall not far away, and a perfect locale to leave as well. In the morning it is about 20 minutes by taxi to Heathrow and it is very easy to get into central London. Our local MP is excellent and Hammersmith and Fulham council works well and for the residents of the borough. My area is quiet except for the occasional helicopter and in my time living here it has only improved.
Transport
There are busses on Shepherds Bush Road, Shepherds Bush Green, Holland Road and Hammersmith Road that will take you anywhere. There is the Central Line and the Overground at Shepherds Bush and the District Line can be connected next to the Olympia.
Community
There is pid parking and Permit Parking, the bins are collected twice a week (Tuesday dn Friday) and the Recycling is collected on Tuesday with the council providing the bags. The streets are clean and I think Hammersmith and Fulham do an excellent job . There are owners and renters with the council owning a few houses. My street has only large Victorian houses which have been turned into flats. The houses in adjacent streets are smaller and are probably mostly owner occupied. The rents are a bit too high for students and I imagine that singles, couples, and families with only a few children live on my street. Although there are cars passing, I am never aware of traffic noise as it doesn't warrant the word "traffic". Passersby are mostly people in the neighbourhood.
Amenities
I am perfectly situated on a broad street with wide pavements in a neighbourhood that has small shops for groceries, cleaners, a pharmacy, and small restaurants. It is quiet though near the bustle of Shepherds Bush where there is the Central line as well as the Overground along with Westfield shopping centre. The Bush has masses of shops, banks, petrol, everything you might want and at the other end there are Uxbridge Road and Goldhawk Road: two excellent roads with restaurants, food shops and The Shepherds Bush Market. If I go in the opposite direction there is the Olympia with its exhibitions and the Overground and the District Line station. There are buses at the Bush, on Holland Road, and in front of the Olympia that traveling all directions and Holland Park, Shepherds Bush Green, and Brook Green, where there is a big Tesco, are within walking distance.
