The amenities within walking distance is really a strong point - short trips can be made for groceries and the occasional takeaway without needing to take the car. The surrounding streets are usually very quiet, however if a more bustling and busy atmosphere is desired, this can be found a short distance away on the high street, where buses can be caught and friends can meet to eat out at restaurants and take-aways. Although the lack of an underground station can be frustrating, the perks of the area and the general safety and security still make it a very pleasant place to live and raise a family.

Transport

Transport links is not one of the strong suits of the area. There is only one overground station, and this tends to get very busy during peak times. However, bus routes are plentiful and buses are regular! Traffic is to be expected, with a large hospital and busy high streets nearby, but not unreasonable.

Community

On street parking is plentiful, and usually a few bays are available throughout the day. The area remains fairly quiet throughout the day, and does not really experience significant anti-social behaviour. There are a mixture of residential dwellings in the area - houses with families, and apartments with couples and single professionals.

Amenities

The area is just a short walk to Peckam Road, a high street with a great selection of restaurants and take-aways - you can grab an arab falafel, an italian pizza, or a traditional British fish and chips! To the east is Denmark hill, where popular chain stores can be found such as Greggs, McDonals, Superdrug and Poundland. An array of supermarkets are also found within close proximity, you are literally spoiled for choice. The street has a Morrisons, Lidl, and Co-op. While there are an abundance of food places, the area does lack clothing retailers (other than the odd independent business), so a quick pop into Primark or H&M is not possible. There are a few green spaces dotted around nearby also, however they are not significant in size, and the area is very much largely metropolitan. The greens are frequented by students from nearby university campuses, and medical students from Kings College Hospital, just a short distance away.

SE5:,An Extraordinary Ordinary Place!

The area is definitely safe, trendy, upmarket and a good place to raise kids owing to proximity to social amenities, parks, schools, libraries, hospitals, listed churches and in fact very historical places like the birth place of Charlie Chaplin, Oliver Goldsmith etc. It’s also a nice place to have and raise a pet. Well, everyone has got one with cats being the favourite.

Transport

Camberwell and in fact the whole of SE5 is just a stone throw from Central London and therefore centrally located with underground, overground, national rail, Santander cycle and buses literally a stone throw from every single doorstep. The area being near to Central London, in fact, about 2 miles is well served by night buses. The central location makes rush hour a pleasurable experience because there’s always another bus behind!

Community

Being near to central London, parking can be a problem but then with well connected public transport who cares. Also, there’s always a Zipcar around the corner as well as Santander bike littered everywhere! Though on a major road leading into London, I must confess that traffic noise is not that bad compared to other suburbs near to a major city. The area is also not bad in terms of security so far you take caution. Being a predominantly student living area, you’d expect some anti-social behaviours sometimes but not one serious enough to invite a major concern. Think about, students will always be students!

New York is a city that never sleeps. If that’s true then Camberwell is a suburb of London that suffers from insomnia. The suburb is always lively with huge open Burgess Park, probably the biggest in London. The Camberwell High Street is centrally located and well connected to all parts of London. In fact, it’s less than 20 minutes walk from Central London. Living in Camberwell is like living in Central London but on a suburb budget. The High Street is never lacking in anything including restaurants, gyms, schools, library and every single thing in life that makes a huge city. The transport link is also on top as the Camberwell just like the rest of SE5 is centrally located to underground, overground, national rail, Santander bike and of course bus routes service almost half the buses in London going into Central London.
