What I like most about my area is how local everything is and how easy it is to get to places. What I dislike the most is the anti social behaviour and honestly it would be such a great area if it did not have this issue. The atmosphere is my area is very busy and there’s always something going on, surprisingly even to me it is a bit up market but also cheap (in a good way) which i guess is why it attracts all sorts of people and a large diversity. The area is suitable for children and pets, on my street there is a school that is surrounded by residential areas and houses which is great for families as they have their kids school right outside their front door or just down the road. The area is fairly safe, the rate of crime is not as high compared to other parts of London.
Transport
In E1 I think there is about 2-3 local underground stations, 2-3 over ground, 2-3 DLR stations, nearest TFL rail is Liverpool Street. I think the service and transport links is extremely good, of course you will get rush hour but if your good with your time and know when it gets busy then it’s not a big issue. There are buses everywhere and you don’t have to wait too long, most of the transport is very clean and comfortable.

Parking availability is great at night but not so great during the day but parking is always a headache in every area you go to. The bins in my area are collected every week. There is some Anti social behaviour in the area and it seemed to worsen during lockdown however when it is reported it does get taken seriously and dealt with straight away, sometimes you may see police patrolling the area at night to make sure that there is no antisocial activity and to keep residents safe. Traffic noise is not bad, the street is fairly quiet. Mostly families live on my street.
Amenities
The area E1 is very close to the city and there are many local shops and restaurants. In E1 there are all sorts of restaurants such as Chinese, Indian, Italian and Turkish and tai. The area even has its traditional English fish and chips located in brick lane and the price of it is not too expensive. I think the most popular area in E1 is Whitechapel as it’s constantly bustling full of shops, stalls and Indian/Bangladeshi restaurants. There are many parks and open spaces, specially in residential areas and also some parks have a free outdoor gym and this allows many locals to come out for exercise or a breath of fresh air. Most of the parks and open spaces are maintained well and looked after by the council. I would honestly say that E1 does not have any amenities missing, it seems like there’s everything in such a small part of London, I would say whoever lives in E1 is very lucky because almost everything is local including train stations and supermarkets.
Great particularly for families
One thing that seems very important to mention is that there is a community centre on our street that was particularly helpful during the pandemic as they distributed free food parcels to the neighbourhood but they also offer childcare, clubs and trips. There are two parks, a children’s park within the estate (accessible to anyone) and a dog park a minute’s walk further. There is a local shop a minute away, a few pubs and a local sainsbury and tesco and a cinema 10 minutes walk away.
Transport
As I already mentioned, there many train stations within walking distance, making a significant amount of journeys permissable, such as Tower Gateway, Tower Hill, Aldgate, Aldgate East and larger stations such as Fenchurch and Liverpool St, all of which are generally reliable. The traffic can be pretty bad sometimes, particularly from 4-6, but some days you can get lucky. I’d say it’s more an area meant to people who make use of public transport but it is also not impossible to have a car, as we have one. The traffic is not too bad depending on your direction, for example the Highway is pretty busy, the direction of Southwark, Limehouse, but smaller roads such as Leman St, Alie St, aren’t too bad. Buses include 15, 100 and others going in pretty much every direction except towards Limehouse/Docklands. The buses do not come to often however and I would suggest using train.

The only issue with my street would be parking availability is pretty bad, traffic noise occasionally but genuinely not so often. The street is mainly filled with families. Bin collection is pretty good too, with loads of bins around.
Amenities
There are many things in the local area, exciting places to go that are a 5-15 minute walk. Tower bridge and the Tower of London, St Katherine’s Docks with restaurants that have the view of boats and water (particularly beautiful at night) for example Zizzi’s and Kilikiya. Just across the bridge there is The Ivy, Vapianos and more new restaurants to come in that vicinity. Not far from important stations such as Fenchurch, Liverpool St and very close to stations such as Tower Gateway, Tower Hill, Aldgate and Aldgate East. Not to mention Central London is a short drive away.
Not feeling safe is the worst part of living in this area
Not feeling safe is the worst part of living in this area. Needs a complete renovation.
Transport
Bit far away from the tube station but is doable. Transport links have a good service and it’s always easy to get back no matter where you’re travelling from at what time of day.
Community
Close to a McDonalds, close to a hospital. Tesco express is useful for grabbing what you need. Bin collections regular.
Amenities
Good food options but not much else to do. Not many bars around or places with fun activities. Needs more open space as currently feels very cramped.
Shadwell is connected via DLR, which is only one stop away from central London (Bank station)
