It’s an up market zone with a lot of rich money around. If you’re lucky you might spot a b list celebrity and if you really want to you can go for walks in the back streets to look at the fancy houses that have been built for millions of pounds around Hampstead Heath. Mussell hill is close by and has a great buzz, loads of cool shops and local businesses with unique goods and services. Plenty of dog walkers around and even a fair few cats hanging about the streets. Yet to spot a fox which is also quite a rare thing to experience in london. The schools here are fancy and not entirely sure of whether there are any public schools around.
Transport
Train station is close by and has northern line connections, Highgate is pretty far up on the line so it’s around a 30 min journey to central london. Ps, bring earmuffs, probably the underground journey most likely to blow your eardrums. Many busses available and night buses also. Generally very reliable but can be choppy around rush hour. Driving here tends to be fine, not too much traffic most of the time but busy periods can get hectic. The main road is quite a core street but most of the time there aren’t any significant issues.
Community
Mostly older people and middle aged professionals. Few young renters although young professionals are around. Tends to be families for the most part. Very quiet area and decent parking options. There are a few uncontrolled streets but residents parking is easy enough to get. Most homes here however have drives you may be fine on that front.
Amenities
An affluent area littered with fancy cars (more Tesla’s than you can count) and plenty of sights to see. Fancy a walk in the park? Hampstead Heath is 5 mins away, too big? Then head down to Highgate Woods for a spot of cricket with a cup of tea from the cafe. There are plenty of local amenities, a 7/11 Sainsbury’s as well as plenty of local boss-man shops if you fancy risking it. There is also a theatre for those interested in the finer arts although it’s been hit pretty hard by the effects of the pandemic. Post office located on the main street and plenty of cooler shops like hipster coffee, an Italian deli, charity shops and plant stores too. Not the greatest for takeaways although there is a decent Turkish spot and a Chinese right next to each other but let’s be honest, Deliveroo gets you everything you want and more. Gyms are around but mostly personal trainer type of places so can be pricey. Your closest conventional commercial gym is a 10 min bus journey or 20 min walk away in Mussell hill. Not too bad but if you’re moving in anytime soon you’ll probably want to grab a pull up bar from Amazon given the pandemic and all. Train station is close by and has northern line connections, Highgate is pretty far up on the line so it’s around a 30 min journey to central london. Ps, bring earmuffs, probably the underground journey most likely to blow your eardrums. Rents aren’t too bad given what you get for your money, most homes have high ceilings and plenty of space so if you’ve got a rental budget of around £1500 a month in mind then you’ll be very satisfied with the quality (split between two makes it somewhat affordable for london standards). If I wasn’t so attached to the hood I’d give it a 10/10 but there’s not enough drama for my liking, if you want to sit out on the front porch/street corner with a cup of tea watching the neighbours argue, this is not the place. Otherwise it’s a pretty nice place to live.
Everything you need right by the park
The area north of NW5 is very safe, quite posh and traditional, although quite multicultural as well in some places, especially around the tube stations. It is nice with children with several schools a walkable distance, and perfect for pets: it isn't rare to see cats walking around, and of course Hampstead Heath a few minutes away is dog heaven with a lot of furry friends walking around. I really like the feeling of being in a village with everything close and the park with a beautiful view on the city, all while being very close to Central London with transportation.
Transport
I find transportation very good. The tube (Kentish Town and Tufnell Park) could be a 10-15 minute walk depending on where you live in NW5, but there are buses everywhere, going everywhere in London. I find them really practical and cheap, and they run really often even at night. With the overground as well there are many options for transportation that are reliable, safe and clean. However during rush hours I would recommend the underground to go to Central London, as traffic can be unpredictable and buses can take longer than planned, so there are better for short distances.
Community
In my street there are mainly families and empty nesters or retired people, there doesn't seem to be many young children though so it is also very quiet but still lively. The main streets might be noisy but mine and most streets around are very quiet. I have seen no problem with parking availability, bin collection or anything else, and the streets are always very clean.
Amenities
There is everything someone could need around Kentish Town underground station: shops from the cheapest (Lidl) to the highest quality/organic cute shops and everything in between, bars around the main street, and every food option throughout the neighbourhood so no need to walk too far. There are also a lot of nice restaurants and shops around Tufnell Park station for those who live more north of NW5. You won't find much for clothes shopping but there's several charity shops, libraries, and also medical centres, banks, or anything needed. For events there is the O2 Forum, and Hampstead Heath is a few minutes away (the best part!) so you could easily never leave the neighbourhood. Transportation is really good as well with the Northern line, Overground, and buses going everywhere in London. NW5 is the perfect place to have a more relaxed lifestyle, by the park, with quiet streets but every amenity a short walk away - all while living only 20 minutes from central London and a walking distance from Camden. It might not be as vibrant as other London neighbourhoods though, maybe more adapted for families and professionals than students.
Highgate is a lovey place to raise children
overall i love the atmosphere of my area and think it is a social and loving community
Transport
transport is okay. there are many busses and for the size of the area i would say the amount of travel available is appropriate. Rush hour would be my only issue but i don’t think that is the areas fault
Community
I would say the anti social behaviour is okay as it is kept to a minimum but there are certain aspects you cannot control such as members of public
Amenities
Highgate is a lovey place to raise children. They go to an amazing school in the area and there are a great range of activities. My only change would to make somewhere for the youth to go.
Traditional with a strong sense of community and history.
